Here are a couple of excerpts from an issue of Motor Boating magazine from an early 20th century edition. William Hand's designs were for semi displacement hulls with low power requirements and good sea keeping abilities. I believe his designs were the inspiration for boats like the Ninegret, Harry Bryan's Handy Billy and of course Jacques Merton's Nina.
